While no official announcement has been made, the news comes as the airline industry anticipates the imminent retirement of current FAA Acting Administrator Billy Nollen, who is leaving the FAA this weekend. Nolen will reportedly join Archer Aviation, a passenger eVTOL company. Nolen’s resignation leaves a vacancy at the top of the FAA. The Biden administration has yet to announce its next permanent candidate since front-runner and Denver Airport CEO Phil Washington withdrew from the process in March.
Polly Trottenberg currently serves as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and supports Secretary Buttigieg. Mr. Trottenberg has experience in both politics and transportation. From 2014 until 2020, Mr. Trottenberg served on the New York City Transportation Commission, where he ran a 5,800-person agency responsible for the broad organization of New York City’s transportation infrastructure and services.
Mr. Trottenberg also served as assistant secretary and under secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation during the Obama administration. In the United States Senate, he has worked under Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Majority Leader Charles Schumer, and Senator Barbara Boxer.
