The growing cooperation between South Korea’s drone industry and Bangladesh is a good example. Mr. Malikfida He Khan, Executive Director of Bangladesh Center for Environmental Geographic Information (CEGIS), as a VIP guest, gave a compelling talk about the important role of drone technology in environmental conservation in his country.
Established in 2022, CEGIS is a Public Trust and Center of Excellence (COE) by the Government of Bangladesh under the Ministry of Water Resources. CEGIS is a multidisciplinary center responsible for the introduction and deployment of cutting-edge technologies available to address the country’s most pressing challenges, including water resources, agriculture, fisheries, power and energy, and climate change.
Bangladesh has more than 500 rivers and the river landscape offers a rich natural resource of fish, forests and wildlife. This landscape also makes the country vulnerable to floods and natural disasters, and river management is essential to one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Drones offer significant advantages in environmental monitoring, such as riverbank erosion and water quality measurements, Khan explained, adding that the country is committed to advancing drone technology. CEGIS plans to establish a drone center within CEGIS through its ongoing partnership with the Korean drone industry. Cooperation between Bangladesh and South Korea’s drone industry demonstrates the importance of mutually beneficial technology deals, opening up the rapidly expanding market to South Korean companies and providing Bangladeshi stakeholders with rapid deployment of new technologies. It offers.
The partnership is already making tangible progress in the use of drone technology for river management, which could set an example for other parts of the world. South Korea’s techno parks, including Drone Show Korea host Busan Techno Park, play a key role in promoting the export of South Korea’s technology. In 2022, Busan Technopark has facilitated the export of the first water drone to Bangladesh. Uconsystem’s Remo-SV measures eight water quality parameters in real time while performing bathymetric surveys. Bathymetric Survey of River Systems in Bangladesh Enables National Flood Planning and Development.
Taekyun Kim, head of the Future Aviation Industry Technology Center at Busan Technopark, sees immense potential in Bangladesh’s drones and emerging technologies. “There are so many efficiencies in managing Bangladesh’s river system. [using drones]’ he says. “Traditional surveying methods are very time consuming.”
This year, CEGIS and Busan TechnoPark are collaborating on a new project to design a solution for the Forestry Department of Bangladesh. The project will provide a ruggedized fixed-wing drone platform made in South Korea to survey the Sundarbans Forest, one of the world’s largest mangrove forests and an important biodiversity ecosystem. Surveyors use sensors such as multispectral, IR and live video surveillance to provide critical data about the thundervan and assist in management tasks.
