BetaFPV Cetus Pro Kit User Review

I won’t go into too much detail on how to fly this drone or what modes and features it has. If you’re looking for more tutorials on how to fly it, this isn’t it.

This is a review, not a manual. So without further ado, let’s get started.

A little bit about me and FPV

I’ve been flying drones professionally for about 3 years, but I’m new to FPV flying.

I’ve always been interested in learning, but I wasn’t ready to put the time and effort into learning not only how to fly, but all the mechanics behind building these drones. .Because it is a big part of the FPV drone.

It crashes frequently and I need to know how to fix it.

I’ve used the simulator Liftoff (moderately in my case) and often found it boring and discouraging.

Now, some might say, “Well, it could be that FPV flying isn’t for you,” but I promised myself to keep trying.

My interest is in flying the real thing, so when BetaFPV contacted me to try out the Cetus Pro kit, I thought I’d give it a try.

After all, as a beginner, I was the perfect candidate to test if this was really made for beginners.

For full disclosure, yes BetaFPV sent me this drone. Instead, I write a review.

However, I don’t have any other skins in the game, so I have no incentive to write only positive things.

Cetus Pro FPV Kit: What’s in the Box and Specifications

Below is what is included in the kit and what I got, as well as my initial reaction to the quality of the product.

Included:

• the quadcopter itself
• Radio transmitter (remote control)
• FPV goggles
• 2 lipo batteries (450mAh 1S)
• Battery charger and USB-C cable
• Type C adapter
• prop removal tool
• 4 extra props
• User manual and quick start guide
• bag/case

In addition to this, I also got a box of spare batteries, a lanyard necklace to attach to the controller, and a keychain. I also got another drone, another box of extra batteries, a battery charger, a lanyard and a keychain.

But there is a reason for this. This will be explained later in this article.

Below you will find all the items listed here.

My first reaction when I opened the box and first found the case was a really big “wow”.

The case that the drone and accessories were in was much better quality than I expected. Everything was compactly stored in a hard case covered with gray cloth.

My next reaction when I opened the case was ‘cute’ as the drone was absolutely tiny!

Compared to the case, the parts inside were made of cheap plastic and weighed very little.

Honestly, I didn’t mind the cheap plastic because as long as the drone was durable and everything worked and continued to work, I was happy.

Overall, in terms of initial reactions, everything was better than expected!

Strong Points

These are some observations I made about what I liked about this drone after a few weeks of testing.

1. Extremely durable. Of course, my first test flight included crashes, and then many more, but the drone held up very well. There was a small superficial crack on the top of the drone that cannot be seen in the photo.
2. It was easy to understand and I was able to fly immediately. It took me maybe 10 minutes to get up in the air after first opening the box and charging everything. It was a big selling point for a kit that could fly. .
3. altitude hold. Altitude hold is an essential feature when trying to learn. The drone doesn’t sit perfectly still when both joysticks are in the middle, but it can hold its position well enough not to get out of control. Not runaway and maintaining altitude is obviously a big perk when learning, so BetaFPV did a great job in that regard! Note that this is only available in N mode.
4. It’s so much fun to fly! Once you got the hang of it, being able to dive into different rooms in the apartment and try to land in certain areas or around tight corners was pretty cool.
5. Small and compact, very portable. Especially with the convenience of the case, you can easily carry it on the go. I travel a lot so that’s really important to me.

Cons

1. Made for indoor flight. This isn’t necessarily a deal breaker for me, but it’s definitely an indoor drone. I was probably about 7 meters away from me before the video feed started dropping.
2. not very responsive. Altitude becomes very unresponsive when battery voltage is low. Drones often act like they’re throttled up a bit when the throttle is in the down position. This caused many ceiling crashes.
3. No video recording option. This drone is not made to record video footage out of the box. Video feed is for goggles. But again, this doesn’t deter me from a great deal given that this is a starter drone to learn. Therefore, it was garbage anyway.
4. The goggles were uncomfortable on my nose. I personally didn’t have a problem with this, but many who have flown this drone complained that the goggles’ plastic hurt where they hit their noses, and would have preferred a less rigid material in that area. .
5. slot Because the battery is too tight. We’ll devote the entire next section to this, but the area created for the battery is only large enough to contain it. It is Maybe the drone is too small to hold the battery in place with Velcro, but it’s definitely a tight squeeze and you don’t want to put pressure on the lithium battery.

Lithium battery accident

I was a little scared while testing the drone to write a comprehensive review.

As mentioned in the cons above, one thing I’ve noticed about the drone is the tiny slot that’s big enough to plug in a lithium battery.

Well, it turns out it doesn’t slip in so easily. After the battery was charged and ready to be hooked up to the drone, it seems I got a little too aggressive in trying to fit the battery into the tiny space it was made for.

It didn’t look like I pushed it that hard.I think the battery accidentally hit something too sharp in the wrong place and exploded.It exploded in my hand with gray smoke everywhere came out.

This was all inside my apartment so I managed to separate the drone and the battery and threw them both onto the balcony when the battery caught fire.

The battery basically melted onto our balcony and we had to open all the doors and windows to get the smoke out. I have a cat so I took him for a walk while the apartment smoked.

The bottom of the drone had also melted, so my plans to test the drone that night were literally thrown out the window (and onto my balcony).

When I told BetaFPV about this accident, I thought it was a common occurrence due to tight spaces, but they said it was the first time they had heard of it.

Maybe I was just unlucky or had a bad battery that I didn’t realize before I put it in the drone, but I wanted to mention that this happened.

BetaFPV kindly sent me a new drone so I could continue testing. We’ve never had an issue like this before.

This is why I ended up getting an extra item when I listed what I got earlier in the article.

Conclusion

Eventually, BetaFPV Cetus Pro Kit is rated 7 out of 10 Because it’s an absolute blast to fly, extremely durable, and great everywhere it’s made for that purpose.

Where this drone loses points was on responsiveness (this is very important for learning because we want the input to actually move the drone as intended). Second, we were able to improve the design of the battery case. Too tight can lead to more accidents (based on my personal experience, of course).

I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get started in FPV without a large investment, even if they have no experience or knowledge of FPV.

A great test to see if you like this hobby and want to invest more time, money and effort.

It’s a good transition from simulator to real, as the N-mode feature can hold its position, so it doesn’t crash every two seconds.

I’ve been flying this drone for weeks and still consider myself a beginner and there’s still so much more I can do with the Cetus Pro.

I would love to see and share where this drone takes me. So far, I’m excited to fly another of her FPV drones that can tap cameras and record footage.

If you want to upgrade to a more advanced ready-to-fly kit, or cine whoop, I’d definitely look to BetaFPV.
